Help needed

I have a daughter who is 24, Aspergers, OCD, has tantrums and hits out and severe depression and on anti-depressants. We get no help from anyone, she's never slept through a whole night, she's got a degree but because she's seen as intelligent, which she is, the medical profession don't care or want to help in anyway.

Basically I have never been on these forums before but I need advice on who to turn to what help we can get, how to cope.

  • The NAS(Not ASPERGERS Service) may help you with a few numbers to phone, probably just local chippies number.

You have just described the classic ASPERGERS TRAP which is not recognised by anyone. Welcome to my world.

  • Hi Crystal

    Thanks for replying

I have had a carer's assessment but again was told that I don't qualify for any help either.

Will try and find out what befriending services we have here, but will not hold my breathe.

    Thanks again

  • Hi Lost - it does make me wonder who decides + on what basis who needs help or not.  Maybe it varies around the country.  You could ask for a carer's assessment for yourself which would possibly attract some services.  In my area it's done by a charity, not directly be social services.  You can ask via your GP, if you haven't already.  Also some areas have befriending services so again, if you haven't already, check that out.  Social services may know.   I hope you + your daughter get somewhere with this as it's grossly unfair.  There's always lots of understanding on this forum.  bw

  • Hello Hope,

Thanks for your reply. My daughter does still live at home and did have a community care assessment, but we were told as she was able to hold an intelligent conversation with them then she was ineligible to any help. She saw a psychiatrist who said that he'll review her again in a years time, and our GP doesn't know where to turn to next.

Will try and find out about local Autism charities, our local Crossroads don't have funding for a group at the moment.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, it was very kind of you.

  • Hello Lost. I am 25 years old, have Aspergers, OCD and severe anxiety, although fortunately no depression. I receive help from my local Autism charity - most places have them. Do you have one? I receive specialist help from Autism support workers, who have helped me secure a part-time job, do voluntary work, go on outings, and overcome my fears. Your doctor or mental health team should be able to provide you with information about services. Has your daughter had a community care assessment? Does she still live at home? I have also done a degree, and have tantrums now and again; I think it is because, while intellectually I am an adult, emotionally I am still a child!
