Fear of babies and pre-school aged children

Hi,

Sorry if this has been asked before I've not quite sussed out how to search all the topics yet.  My 9yo son has diagnosed autism, in recent years he has started struggling in the presence of babies and toddlers.  To the extent where Fight or Flight seriously takes over.  Standard meltdowns I can help him with we have coping mechanisms in place, but this one I just can't seem to help him.  I think its the fear they will make a noise or cry (he pushed his twin sister down the stairs not that long ago because she wouldnt stop crying).  We had a dangerous situation at the weekend where he ran out of the place we were in before I could blink.  Thankfully he was surrounded by family and didn't get too far, but he isn't normally a runner and it has scared me.  SLT have suggested a social story, I have a TAC at school tomorrow to go over it and see what we can come up with, I'm just really wondering if anyone has any experience and can suggest something we could try?

Thanks in advance.

Claire

  • Thanks Nikki, it was his Neuro paed and his normal paed that suggested SLT and the social story so school and I will work on that, they are also looking into hyperacusis at present as it was something I had looked into, he isn’t a fan of ear defenders I’ll keep working with the docs thank you x

  • Hi Claire, in my experience many autistic kids have sensory processing issues. They do not like certain noises. My son cannot stand noises of us chewing food, crunching crisps etc. He was diagnosed with hyperacusis.  My son also gets annoyed when neighbours's kids get noisy. He does not have younger siblings but is not a fan of little kids as he feels they are noisy and a nuisance.  It might be worth getting him checked with a pediatrician who specialises in neurodevelopmental  disorders who might then suggest an Occupational therapist.
