How to go about getting a diagnosis?

Hello,

i am new to this community as I am starting to suspect my daughter has symptoms of Aspergers / mild spectrum disorder. She is very monotonal, struggles with friendships and forming a natural bond - and the odd occasion she has there are always problems. She needs to feel a level of control over the world around her. She is 9 years old. i wondered how we go about getting a diagnosis ? Do you start with the GP? And indeed what the point is - would there be likely to be any kind of support in school with a lower level of need?
Any wisdom gratefully received!

  • Your GP can refer for further assessment. Just explain as clearly as possible what you think is the issue is (autism) and why you think it is that and not various other things. Often it’s the combined picture rather than one or two things. Concrete examples help too but aren’t always possible. Your daughter’s school might also have a nurse who can refer but this is less likely.
You’ll usually be given a questionnaire and asked for your permission to send a similar questionnaire to her school.
Most support comes from understanding and the making of, usually small, adjustments. Understanding on a personal level that somethings are inherently harder allows more self acceptance and less stress/taking it personally.
