Son, 7, with sensory habit of having hand down trousers

Hello all, I'm new. My son R is now 7 and growing fast. He also has mild cerebral palsy meaning his right hand side isn't as strong (sensorimotor weaknesses) as his left. Unfortunately he had a broken leg earlier this year due to a playground fall. At this time (weeks of sitting around feeling glum) he developed a habit of self soothing with the left hand inside his pants. There is no masturbatory behaviour involved, but it's quite awkward now as he does it pretty much constantly. Does anyone have any advice? We have kept the approach gentle of course, explaining we can touch ourselves in private but it doesn't look nice otherwise, but it's not getting better.

Thanks

Debbie

  • If the touching is not in the crotch area couldn’t he wear shorts. A person who absent mindedly strokes his thigh may seem odd but at least it’s  less likely to be mistaken for something else if the thigh is bare anyway and he doesn’t need to reach into his wasteband
