Feeling slightly lost.

My son is nearly 4 years old and I have yet to hear his voice. 

I have read so many forums and blogs but never written any myself, I think I need that interaction from parents that know what I’m dealing with. My son is my absolute best friend but I am really struggling to help him. He doesn’t talk at all and when he was younger he said so much. He has been diagnosed with autism so I know it isn’t going to be easy.. I’m just so unsure about what to do. He is in mainstream school but doesn’t seem to be progressing. He struggles to listen, follow any instructions and will scream of he is told no. I feel like every milestone he should hit hasn’t been met and I’m so scared it’s my doing. He is still in nappies which I am so ashamed about but he can’t tell me he needs to go as he doesn’t speak. Would finding a specialist school be more beneficial as I really don’t think this is helping at all??

  • Hi I know how you feel am new to this and I too have the exact same lost feelings on not knowing how to help my own child I think what type of idiot am I and it makes me feel like such a failure as a mum, my daughter is only approaching 2 and am at the very beginning of this journey we are yet to still get a referral accepted and am all in limbo with were to go and what to do for the best my daughter isn't speaking any words at all yet but did used to babble and say baba and dada. 

    As for you with your son please don't feel ashamed about him still wearing nappys hey some kids who arnt facing the difficulties your son is can still be in them at that age my daughter is 4 nearly 5 in December and still won't poo on the toilet she prefers her potty and it took me till she was 3 to get her out nappys for weeing and she would still ask for 1 when she needed a poo up until 3 and half so please don't ever feel ashamed your doing your best and as for a special school then only you can make that decision maybe go visit a few and speak with them and if in ur mind they will meet his needs more and he may progress more at 1 then make that choice but it may ease the worries as they will be alot more supportive i imagine whatever you chose I wish you all the support and best wishes you need remember look after yourself too and never put yourself down for doing the best you possibly can ey I should take my own advice on that last nite
