Parent help! 13yr old daughter struggling with school early stages of ASD diagnosis.

My 13yr old daughter is in early stages of ASD diagnosis. My daughter was able to mask for such a long time because she thought everybody just experienced the world like she did so we all secretly struggled together plus her dad being in the forces school easily put her need to run out of class etc and seek support in relation to stress and anxiety of dad working away.

Secondary has been a nightmare for her since you need to be more independent. socially she struggles but her main problem at the moment is she can cope with mainstream school well , she is above in all areas but she can not cope with the classroom environment it triggers a serious sensory and emotional response so to stop herself screaming and flipping chairs tables etc she will run out of class, hide and cry until calm and on occasion spent many hours in the toilets doing school work. This is now having serious impact on her wellbeing and also the improvements socially as she is isolating herself from school environment again because she is struggling to cope.

The school has put in as much support as they can at the moment, services are slow in my area and although I do have experience of ASD with my own job as a parent I am stuck on what I should do with a girl who is not wanting to attend school but very much wants to learn. In an ideal world she said " I would love a quiet space to do my learning at school " she has some time in the learning loft but school can't facilitate this ongoing all day.

Any advice or anyone going through same would be very much appreciated.

  • hiya,

I completely understand your daughter, I am in a very similar situation.

my teachers were really understanding last year and I would go and get the work from them and would do it in the canteen (when it was empty) or outside a teacher's office. is there any way that she could just do the work in empty classrooms or something?
