Starting the process for assessing our 5 year old son - any advice?

Hi, this is my first post, and this is all very new, so I'd really appreciate any thoughts / suggestions from the people on this forum.

We were told yesterday by someone with expertise of austism in an educational setting that they think our son may have autism. He does have some unusual behaviours but not the main ones mentioned on e.g. the NHS website, so even though we'd considered it before, we'd dismissed it. After some further reading though, there are a lot of matches, especially with the behaviours mentioned under the "Unusual or restricted interests and/or rigid and repetitive behaviours" section of this website: Microsoft Word - signs of autism primary.doc (ne-as.org.uk)

We managed to schedule a call with a GP (not our own) today, and he's arranged an appointment for us with our own GP next week. I understand that this is only the start of what could be a very long process... I was just wondering whether anyone has any suggestions for that session and indeed the road ahead? Are there any particular questions we should be asking at this stage? Are there things you wished you'd known at the start of the assessment process that you learned the hard way instead?

Many thanks in advance, we've never needed it before so it's great that this resource is here.
