Telling my son he might have autism

Hi. I am new to this forum. My 13 year old son has shown autistic tendencies all his childhood but when he moved up to secondary school his behaviours and emotions became a lot worse, so much so he refused to go to school and I now home school him. An autism assessment has just been started but I have not yet talked to my son about it as I don’t know the best way to approach it. He was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was 9 and he convinced himself he was a freak and struggled so much with the diagnosis. I am terrified this will happen when I talk to him about possibly having autism as well. Any advice on how to approach this would be much appreciated.
