IQ Test DLA

Hi,

I'm the father of an Autistic child (Diagnosed and with EHCP). He's currently on the Mid Rate Care Component for DLA. But I'm concerned I may be under claiming based on his circumstances. He's low functioning Autistic and attends a special school.

One of the criteria for the higher rate Care component of DLA is an IQ score of 55 or less. Although this is not essential, it is easier to prove "Severe impairment of intelligence" and when taken into consideration with other evidence from his special school, EHCP etc I think he probably qualifies for the higher rate care component.

Has anyone reading this managed to get an IQ test for a child like my son, and if so where? And what source is acceptable to the DWP?

  •  I have never heard of the requirements of an IQ test to support a case for higher rate care component. It’s needs based and how much support your child needs during the day and night.

You should check the DWP Child DLA information on their website and maybe contact the DWP by telephone.

I would also recommend getting citizens advice or money matters to deal with a mandatory reconsideration appeal if you feel your child has greater needs.

  • That's how it works for old folk, day or night only then its lower, both day and night its higher.

My son needs reminding that he shouldn't be up at 4:00 which might be enough to get the higher rate, it's stupid and needs fixing but the extra cash will help pay for the private diagnosis.
