Finally have asd assessment scheduled for tomorrow

So got a phone-call 30mins ago bagged a cancellation slot for asd assessment 9:30 in the morning been waiting over 3 years so accepted it in a heartbeat but worried about how it will go as it is being sprung in son without much time to prepare.

anyone able to advise what will happen so i can prepare him slightly for it?

hes 16 and we based in northern ireland

  • i am in northern ireland and been tested here.

there are usually 2 in the assessment

he will be asked to do some tasks. He will be observed doing these tasks and they watch his behaviour and how interacts with the assessors which are used to talking to children.

I found this as adult a bit weird so maybe a 16 boy will as well. Or it was just one of the women who assessed me always talks that way.

he will be able to do the tasks. they are simple.

one task with with a story book and one with toy figures and objects.

he wont have to read anything. But he will be asked to talk explain what he is doing. he doesnt have to look at the staff if that is too much.  if he doesnt speak dont worry this is expected as well and they will act accordingly.

the staff are very nice and skilled at what they do so dont worry.

make sure he has water or juice to drink with him because its very hot at the moment.

i found it stressful because i became very self conscious

the key thing is to attempt all the tasks and dont worry about being uncomfortable or awkward.

they will talk him through the whole thing

one last thing your son is also allowed to join this forum ( which is for 16 yrs and older )  whether he is diagnosed or not.

alternatively there is a global autism website on Discord.com called ASDirect  he can join. I am a member of it as well.

GO FOR IT best of luck
