Suncream Alternatives?

Hi,

As you can imagine the current hot weather has required lashings of suncream on the children; my eldest in 8 and has autism. She is extremely touch sensitive and has always hated most creams on her skin, but I think the combination of several hot days, lots of suncream and being sweaty and sticky has just pushed he over the edge today. We've had an enormous meltdown this morning, which is not great when we both have to get to work and get the children to holiday club (which she also isn't a fan of, so another contributory factor). I'm just wondering if anyone has any specific types of suncream that are less heavy or greasy or could recommend anything other than actual sucream?? We use Boots Factor 50 8 hour - for obvious reasons... she is a child and it's usually one application for the day.

  • Thank you - I will take a look at the clothing, but getting the right clothing is a minefield at the best of times!!

  • Thank you so much! I have ordered some of the Nivea dry spray today... I do hope that will do the trick!!

  • Anti sun clothing, its often marketed as anti rash clothing or rash guard clothing. some of the stuff protects factor beyond factor 50. check the label as some do and do not.

  • Hi, I'm 18 and I also really struggle with suncream and have for most of my life.

I have had fairly good success with covering up. While not foolproof, you can find lightweight light-coloured long-sleeved tops which really help and you really don't get too hot in. Long skirts to keep my legs cool and protected although I don't know how available these are for young children. And very broad-brimmed hats or caps with flaps can protect most of the face if you can get her to consistently wear them. Honestly, even though I still have to use some e.g. on ears and backs of hands sometimes, just the reduction of the amount (not having to coat legs, arms and face with it) has helped a lot.

Another alternative suggestion I have had made to me by another autistic who struggles with sunscreen is spray on dry sunscreen. They have used a NIVEA version. I have not yet tried it so I cannot comment personally but she has apparently found it really good. It's factor 50 and apparently feels a tiny bit oily when it first goes on but dries really quickly.

I hope something in that was helpful.

  • the only alternative to sun creme is to cover up, which in the heat is probably not comfortable.
