Advice for my son

Hi everyone

Hope your all well, I'm new to the board looking for any advice or guidance

My son is 4 and is pre diagnosed

We have done all the multidisciplinary assements and was informed this week that he as now been accepted at the asdat panel to have a further referral to the autism specialist

For the last year we have all kinda blended into his routine and his needs and his sensory issue's

Recently we are seeing his sensory traits worsen to the point where his health could be seriously risked

This new high sensory issue is very horrible to see

He used to love water but bath time he is screaming to the point he is making himself sick

His body will be covered in a rash from the distress

But I hope we can find a way around that one

The worst is that he as started holding his urine and poo in

To the point we had to rush him to the a n e because of the distress he was showing, the Dr checked and no infection present but it took us a full day to get that sample

When his bladder gives in the screams what come from him are traumatic honestly I have never heard him so distressed

We don't know how to handle this new issue but its safe to say its the most hardest one we have come by so far

The Dr said he may just fizzle out of it and offered no help

And just told us that he will do it in his own time but when he does his urine is dark due to holding it in

Surely this isn't healthy

I hope someone can help

We have tried nappys pottys making it all fun and relaxed but nothing is working and I'm so worried about him

I can cope with then obsession of lining things up and doing his strict routine and his other niggles but this one as thrown me his dad and siblings off track

Thank you

And sorry if this is a long post

I'm glad you took the time to read

  • There may be something connected to bath time that he finds he has a high sensory revulsion towards. It could be anything from the noise of water coming from the taps to the feel of a flannel. The only way to find out, in the absence of him volunteering information, is to experiment.

The continence issues might be a from similar cause, sensory revulsion, they might be deliberate without sensory issues being involved, or they could be from poor interoception, an inability to recognise internal bodily signals (such as thirst, hunger, need to urinate etc.). The latter is quite common in autistics. Finding out the cause would help sort out the problem. There could be a re-enforcement element as well, pain in passing a hard stool or very concentrated urine might trigger an avoidance reaction.
