Schools

Hello, my son has an EHC plan and I need to look at secondary schools for him but I am planning to move home a month or two before he starts secondary school (due to an unforeseen event that has come up) And I was wondering can I look into and apply for schools before I move to the area or do I have to wait till I am at the new address to do so?

I’ll be moving to Thurrock or Havering if anyone has any suggestions btw. I’d ideally like a mainstream secondary school with an ASD unit like his primary school.

lastly, I’ve been told I can get transport for him, is that only to schools within the borough he lives in?

Thanks

  • My daughter moved county last year and she found the school and had her kids booked in, ready to start, for when she moved, that was even before she knew where she was going to be living exactly. If memory serves, she did it all through the education department. She didn't have an EHCP when she moved so both her girls went to a mainstream school, but when her youngest daughter's plan was put in place, she finally started at a SEN school. Your first port of call should be the Ed Dept, I think. They'll be able to steer you through the red tape.

  • Hello. I can describe my experience from Kent but it might be different where you are. Changing schools is managed quite carefully through the Ed Dept. We applied on the same form we applied to get them into primary school when changing between different primary schools but you have to fill in different bits depending on your circumstances (e.g. if moving to a different County or not).

my understanding is that you can apply for schools at the destination you will be moving to before hand.

we found the places first then once we’d visited and confirmed there was space (we did a ‘within the year transfer’) you could put the destination school down

the Ed dept where you are going to should be able to advise you more specifically. I can’t comment on the school itself however

    best wishes
