looking for help with possible processing issue ??

hi everyone, my son, 10, has autism and dyslexia, he's been really struggling with a possible processing issue that i cant find any info on online or else where, this last year hes been more aware of it himself and gets really upset at times. just wanted to know if anyone else suffers or suffered with it and any advice or tips to help get him with it. the issue is that whenever we leave home to go anywhere he literally only recognises his surroundings for about 1/2 roads away from home, he will then be lost, if asked where we are he doesn't know, also if we go somewhere and are on our way back home he doesn't recognise anywhere until were on our actual road. also if while out other people walk between us and he loses sight of me for a split second he starts panicking, crying, hyperventilating and we have to leave wherever and go home. he dosent look visually disabled so other people often have a reaction to his panic, and because hes getting older i really wanna  try give him some coping tools he can use to help with this. also does anyone know what this would be classified as, would help him understand it too

  • This might be absolutely rubbish advice (and you've probably already tried it all) but:

When I was young there was a constant theme of making up stories or navigating by landmarks or counting. (Clearly making stories up by street names might not work for you).

I did think it was all a bit facile and quite annoying but thinking back - maybe it served a purpose that I wasn't aware of.

Eg: Blue house with the pointy edges means there's 3 street to go / When you see the sea from the top of the hill we'll be home in 5 minutes / How many houses between here and there... etc etc

I had an episode 6 months ago and noticed my mother forcing me to repeat the route for going for a 20 minute walk (with the silly/family names for the landmarks) - I was shocked when I suddenly realised I couldn't do it...

  • thanks for posting jj, there's a few different tacts i can try that i didn't think of. i have tried something similar, pointing out specific buildings leading to and from home. he recognises the corner shop but cant attach it to home; maybe like you say it has to be more consistent or different tact, i haven't tried the street names because of his dyslexia but maybe if i read the names for him, he will associate the buildings/landmarks himself.  il let you know how he gets on with it. thanks again for the advice.
