Lack of understanding or something else?

My child has significant communication and speech delay. He has learnt so much but at time I wonder is it lack of understanding or is there something else

He can learn, but if went outside to do a scavenger hunt of all things green, he doesn't understand why he's outside. Even though I explain, that knowledge isn't there. The same if we where to go outside to get flowers that understanding isn't there

Would it be because he can't talk and understand what anything is, or would there be something else??

Any help??

  • There's multiple possibilities for this, lack of understanding is likely at times but not always, especially if you've taught him enough times that suit his needs.

If this lack of understanding always occurs when an activity changes into another it can be a simple refusal. The Autistic mind attends the details of things so being more specific might help. If you say gather green things he may be wondering which green things, there's lots of green things. The same with flowers, just saying flowers he might be wondering which flowers.

Autistic people tend to be fixated on what they're interested in making attention shifting from one activity to another difficult because they're still fixated on the previous one.

To these other activities connect them to his interest, like make a scavenger hunt for green things and what he's interested in.
