Behaviour change

Hi,

My son has recently started lying down on the floor. At first I thought it was noise or light as in a sensory issue.

When we are out shopping he will walk no bother, loves the people the lorries etc. Then when we have to wait at a till he gets fed up, lays on the floor, and sneakily runs off. It's not that he goes running out the door, he just wants to wander round the shop.

When he's with his uncle he never does this, just on me. There's no misbehaving at all.

How do I deal with this. Does it ever stop

Also he's started this obsession with lifts. Everywhere we go he has to get on the lift.

Will I ever just be able to go out get the groceries without all this

Any idea how to help

  • Sounds like he's found a new stim - a pointless behaviour that gives intense comfort.      He's also testing your limits.

He can see that you're not paying attention and he's probably bored looking at lettuce - he's finding things to occupy or excite himself.

Have you considered just taking him out for a day of riding lifts and watching the world - be a child with him - sit and have ice cream and talk about lorries and discuss what might be in them as they drive by.     Let him see that a controlled, respectful day is much more rewarding than a misbehaving day..

  • yes i thought the same.

Yes I have tried this and its the exact same. He will just lye down when its time to go home or if i took him and got him a drink and wee go back to go on say slides etc which he enjoys, he just lye's down.

And when he's there he doesn't have issues with the people or the noise or anything like that but just decides to lye down.

  • Then he's testing you.      He's judged you as weaker than he is so he'll be difficult.   What does his uncle do that prevents this behaviour?   .
