neurology and genetic testing

My 18 month old son has been showing signs of autism since he was a baby, He was born through a traumatic birth and had a head lag, he isn't following any of his milestones, he is defiantly weak on the left side, I have been complaining to health visitors and anyone who will listen doctors physio etc because he seems in pain and tired a lot of the time. He is also very heavy to carry and can't sit unaided for long periods of time. He also hand flaps and his muscles either tense or he is floppy. He had genetic testing and muscular dystrophy test done last week and we have been referred to neurology. He is also hypermobile and gets into crazy positions. Has anyone been in this position?  His 4 year old brother was diagnosed with autism in February this year and I think some professionals may be putting his problems down to autism.

  • This reminds me a bit of my cousins child, didn’t meet any physical milestones as a baby and now uses a walking frame, I think he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy in the end. It is possible your son has one or more comorbid conditions as Daniel mentioned. There may possibly be a birth injury involved too if the left side is significantly worse. As hard as it is I think you need to wait for all the test results. It could be so many things which cause those symptoms. It may end up being like a jigsaw as I tell my patients, there may be quite a few different medical professionals involved to come to the answer

  • I haven't been in your position but so much of what you say do seem to be autistic traits and autism is primarily genetic, so if his brother has it there's a chance he'll be autistic.

The hypermobile is possibly part of another condition, individuals on the spectrum also have another condition with the two most common being epilepsy and ADHD.
