Newbie needing info please

Hi,

my daughter is 11, although she has no diagnosis, I feel she fits a pda profile from what research I have done. Does anyone have any experience of this? She has been seen previously by cahms and has recently been re-referred after police detaining her under mental health after attacking me (punching, kicking, pulling my hair) and making threats to end her life- because I said she wasn’t allowed out with friends after a week of school refusal.

I guess I’m reaching out to you guys for what I should actually be looking for and what professionals I should be approaching. At the moment going private for assessment isn’t really an option as I’m a single parent with two children, so can’t really afford it.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

  • Thank you for replying.

she doesn’t have any other professionals involved, she is very much like an ‘average’ child. But the more I learn about pda the more she makes sense to me. I did previously mention pda to my gp (I printed the checklist to show them) but it seemed to me that she had no idea of what pda is. And when my daughter was previously seen by cahms she wouldn’t engage with them so she was discharged.

I will do everything you have suggested above now, I’m going to be ready to start the fight for this first thing tomorrow morning

  • Just re read your message. Has Camhs mentioned PDA? Have you discussed your thoughts with them about your daughter potentially being Autistic? May be a good place to start. Are there any other professionals involved such as speech and language or educational Psychology?

  • Hello,

My child is diagnosed with Autism spectrum condition with Pathological demand avoidance Profile. He is also 11. PDA society is a great place to start. They have a website that is very helpful. Harry Thomson The PDA paradox is a great book to buy. Harry also has a website. I would suggest contacting your doctor and say you want your child to be referred for a diagnosis of Autism spectrum condition/disorder. I would write down all behaviours that you find challenging and have examples of situations your child needs extra support. Be prepared for the fact your doctor may have never heard of PDA as a lot of professionals who were involved with my son and school had never heard of PDA. I would print information off from the PDA society give this to the doctor to back up your information also.
