Involuntary Movements

Hi there,

I am new to this community and would appreciate your advice. My 15 year old was diagnosed with ASD last year. She does well at school and most of her teachers don’t notice her difficulties. She has a lot of sensory issues but wears sound sensitivity in ear headphones (most people are unaware of this) which really help her.

She is under a lot of pressure at the moment academically - she’s very bright but a perfectionist. They are being constantly assessed and she feel that each of these assessments is crucial due to the Covid situation.

Today she has come home from school exhausted (gone straight to bed) and unable to explain much about what has happened. Apparently, she started ‘twitching’ (back, tummy) and rotating her jaw, which she found incredibly embarrassing. She also has pain in her elbows so said she must’ve been flapping/rotating her arms. This has never happened before.

Have any of you heard of this before? Is it down to being overwhelmed (a form of meltdown?) or do you think something else is going on and she needs to see the GP?

  • I don't know about the arms but a few years back I got really bad twitching with anxiety. Any olace on my body, even inside like my stomach. I didn't know at the time it was anxiety causing it cos I didn't know how anxious I was. It was quite scary. The twitching went away when I learned to manage the anx. That's just one perspective and fro my own experience. Maybe see the gp to put yr mind at rest.
