Reversing numbers and reading new words from middle of them

Good morning,

I'd like to ask if any of you has ever struggled, as a child, with reading. My son will be 7 in three months and has been dyslexia screened in school twice, first time two years ago and second time last December with the same screening test. The first results showed a spiky profile while in December his profile was no longer spiky. School believes he cannot be dyslexic but he reverses numbers while reading, struggles to sound out new words, has brilliant ideas but hates to write them down and so on. So, if it is not dyslexia, could his challanges be enhanced by the possibility of him being in the spectrum? He hasn't got an ASD diagnosis yet as he will be assessed in a few days time.

Thank you for your time

  • you're a way ahead in your head -----

the next assessment is it for dyslexia ? or autism ?

if it is for autism let them assess him they are way better than anyone here

Please dont worry he sounds a marvellous kid

i have dyslexia ( mild ) i switch letters and numbers all the time

I am diagnosed with autistic. I suspect I have ADHD but cant be bothered with a diagnosis.

I struggled with reading and writing from young age to now, parent kids degrees job ------- but I overcame them by reading a lot and repeat reading things eg 3 times.  "slow but sure" is my motto.

    get him into mind improvers

eg learning another language if he is in bilingual family encourage this

    chess and puzzles

    music --- learning an instrument

any martial art or Judo or ballet

mixing with as many kids as possible

mixing with animals as much as possible I learnt so much from animals

    learn to cycle ASAP

  • Thank you for your reply, aidie. I guess I should just learn to wait quietly until the assessment but I am finding it so difficult.

Yes, he will be assessed for ASD. It is reassuring he is doing what seems to have helped you as a child. Thank you for sharing!

He is bilingual, loves  mazes, music (was planning on becoming like Dave Grohl until not long ago), adores his big boy bike and swimming. Blush
