EHCP

Hi Everyone

This is my first post here, just looking for some help and advice of people who may of experienced what I’m going through.

my little one is 4 and an EHCP has just been agreed in theory. My LA have taken so long to agree this. 2 months late. We are now in may and she’s due to start school in September. They have said that her needs would best be met in a mainstream school with Band C funding. I am aware different LA are different.
In my opinion there is just no way she could possibly get on well at a mainstream school, she is non verbal and has limited understanding. She doesn’t interact well with children and is quite content by herself. I just wondered if anybody had an advice on the appeals process or what is going to happen next for us? As my LA is very unhelpful. I’m just looking for some parent experience of any similar situations.

thanks in advance :)

Parents
  • get as many independent expert reports as you can ,in general la's will do the minimum they can . They will lie and delay as much as they can . It took us 18 months to get a placement with my daughter ,they backed down on writing the ehcp, but  went all the way to tribunal on the named school.

Also check out any special schools [they aren't all good], visit ,check out the possible placements ,you need to work out what you want ,then just stick at it ,escalate to seniors in the LA if you are not happy .[ i went to the head of education in my LA twice and the problem was sorted within the day ,that was just e-mails and talking to there secretary]

With my son i ended up home schooling the pressure of school would have just caused to much damage ,he was partly verbal but had non verbal periods . He is 14 now and i can see the benefits ,it has been hard but defiantly worth it.

personally i think school is the worst place for many autistic children causing untold problems and at such a young age is not necessary  as they get older they can manage so much better without that early negative trauma.

I talked with a woman  who ran a unit for non verbal children and she was saying most of the problems she was dealing with were caused by bad mainstream school placement ,especially at the start of secondary transition.

  • Thankyou for your advice. I will bear that in mind
