Busy Shopping Centres... Need Advice

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have any tips of how to deal with the issues of going shopping in a big shopping centre. We are planning to go today and my daughter would like to come which I'm happy with.

She struggles with the sensation of people around her but she's getting better at coping with it. She also doesn't like the noise and lights and all the other input she gets. We have solved one problem which is that her brother won't come because he'll be doing something else and he's also loud and I can't manage 3 kids on my own. She is worried about wearing a mask for a long period of time and she doesn't want to wear ear defenders because she doesn't want to be judged and she's never worn them out in public before.

Any ideas on what to do...

Many thanks x

  • We don't have the lanyard but we were thinking about getting one for her to use on public transport because otherwise she doesn't wear one unless it's a few minutes in a shop.

  • My 22-year old still reaches for my hand in busy places - contact from her means her anxiety is rising.

Do you have the sunflower lanyard?       They are free from most supermarkets.      It alerts people in the know that your daughter has a hidden disability.

I use a clear visor in places that whinge about masks along with my sunflower lanyard - I've had no problems whatsoever.        I actually like the visor - it creates a little micro-climate so it stops gusts of wind annoying me.
