Which school to send my little boy to? Confused!

My little boy is 2 years old and is going through a diagnosis at the moment and we have been told that we should get a full diagnosis by Easter! At present all the professionals have said that the likelihood is that he does have an ASD.

Before my little boy was having his diagnosis I had put his name down for a local Catholic  school...it is the school that I attended and other members of my family too and would like to keep the tradition going. But since September he has been attending a Welsh speaking playgroup two days a week...I didn't necessarily choose for him to have a Welsh education but it was the closest playgroup to me as I don't drive!

He is due to start school next year and I don't know whether to put him into the catholic school or the welsh school...if he goes to the welsh school he will already know the children from playgroup...all the children from his playgroup are going to the welsh school! I'm afraid that if I put him in the catholic school it might be confusing for him as he doesn't like change! but then if I put him in the welsh school do you think it would be confusing for him with the language difference?...welsh school is welsh speaking only and no English is allowed in school...we speak English at home although I have been learning the welsh language too...this is not a problem as I have been told that 95% of the children come from English speaking homes.

It is important to know that he is non verbal also! The other option is to put him in a special school although I had already planned to put him in mainstream...I am a teacher myself (secondary)  but am still undecided about this...all schools have a good inspection report...is there any other parents out there whose autistic children are bilingual? What do you recommend? Thanks

  • hi - difficult decision.  I knew a teacher who thought it made things difficult for autistic children it they were in environments where different languages were spoken. That was her opinion, but it seemed feasible to me.  If I were you I'd be thinking 1st and foremost about what is the best educational environment for you child not just in the short term, but in the longer term.  Have you visited all the schools?   My son went to autism-specific schools + they did a good job.  I've never regretted that he had an education geared to his needs with small classes, a high staffing ratio with people who understood autism.  I wouldn't rule a special school out.  That's my opinion but that's just me!  Check out the posts from parents about pros + cons of mainstream v special.
