18 months old he lost most his speech now at 24 months the rest has gone

At 18 months old my boys and our life changed amongst other things he lost his speech all but the words mammy and daddy and as he developed other problems he always kept them two words which is what we held on two as a kind of hope i guess, but now at 24 months they  have stopped its been 3 days since i remember hearing them, and replaced with hmm umm and deep growns and grunts. What is happening to my baby? and why now,could he be getting worse with age?? what am i doing wrong why is this happening, i see him changing by the day in front of my eyes and all i can do is watch this thing taking over my baby and im completely useless and helpless to him.We are waiting on our referral for his assesment even though his peaditrition suggested she also thought he was on the autistic spectrum we are waiting to hear from a specil needs health visitor tha going start doing home visits and we start speech and language next month. But month is a long time and i need answers and help now things are falling to peaces and i dont no how or were to start fixing them

  • hi - it must he heartbreaking when things go so wrong to suddenly.  My son didn't regress - he reached all his physical milestones but communication etc was always way behind.  Adelsa is right with all she says.   I know things look bleak right now + you feel awful. That's perfectly natural - everyone on here will feel for you and understand.   That doesn't mean it will stay that way.  My son didn't speak until he was 5.  Then he said a short phrase.  He could write before he could talk.   He hasn't shut up since!  It's gd you've started the diagnostic process.  When that's done it'll give you info about your son + his autism.  You've done the right thing. The diagnosis will help all of you.  Remember that you're the most important, constant factor in his life.  He really needs you.  As you learn about autism + how it affects him as an individual then you can be an even bigger help to him than you are now.   You need to give yourself time to adjust.  Things will be emotional right now.  We've all been there + it's hard.  Keep posting - we'll always try to help
