No one else in family with autism

Hello all

I was wondering if anyone else was bothered/concerned/thought about this. My 17-year old daughter has recently been diagnosed with autism. No one else in either side of the family has a diagnosis of autism or could be thought to have autism. I do have a number of very reclusive, introverted members of my family but they are distant relatives to my daughter, a maternal great-aunt, two or three maternal cousins once removed. On my husbands side possibly a cousin who is the same generation as my daughter.

Thank you for your thoughts/views/opinions

  • Thank you for your reply. We do feel comfortable with the diagnosis. It has been helpful for my daughter to know why she feels different and to accept this difference positively. As parents we are able to understand and support her so much better than before. However our continuing struggle is with her overwhelming anxiety. She wants to go out into the world and experience all that it is possible to experience but her anxiety really blocks her ability to do so.

    Thank you again.

  • what you're saying sounds a bit like me. i'm asd, but can only point to maybe half a dozen or maybe slightly more in my extended family of 60, all by blood.  and only one or two who probably are asd, like, noticeably.

best of luck with your daughter.... hopefully you all feel comfortable with the assesment. mine was at a center that specializes in it, i've seen a couple other asd specialists.. . it's taken three years for it to start to feel real. i think your daughter, being younger, will do well.
