Does anyone home-school their teenage ASD child?

Hi

I am sick and tired of being worried about how my son will be at school, despite being out of mainstream he is not in an ASD specific setting (he is at a Medical one) and still having problems.  He is fine at home!!  Waiting for a statement of special needs and waiting for a proper ASD diagnosis at the moment, still got some appointments to go to.

I don't want to home school and I have BIG worries that he would not get on with any work if I tried it, however I feel I need to look into it if only to discount it later!

I wanted to know if anyone out there does it (he is 13 so we are looking at starting GCSE courses soon).  If so is there any extra support and how are you gettnig on?  If I was home schooling and he got a Statement of Special needs, could I get anything from that in terms of expert help/funding?

Thanks!

  • Thank you!  I am glad its going well for you.  I still don't really know what to do for the best as we are still waiting for his statement.  I think his best option would be a special school but our nearest one caters for children who are severely autistic rather than Aspergers and I don't know whether it would be suitable.  Whatever we do next it needs to be successful for him as at the moment he feels he doesn't fit anywhere and that he is failing.

Good luck with your boys, it sounds like you are doing really well.
