Does anyone home-school their teenage ASD child?

Hi

I am sick and tired of being worried about how my son will be at school, despite being out of mainstream he is not in an ASD specific setting (he is at a Medical one) and still having problems.  He is fine at home!!  Waiting for a statement of special needs and waiting for a proper ASD diagnosis at the moment, still got some appointments to go to.

I don't want to home school and I have BIG worries that he would not get on with any work if I tried it, however I feel I need to look into it if only to discount it later!

I wanted to know if anyone out there does it (he is 13 so we are looking at starting GCSE courses soon).  If so is there any extra support and how are you gettnig on?  If I was home schooling and he got a Statement of Special needs, could I get anything from that in terms of expert help/funding?

Thanks!

  • Hi MaryR,

I'm sorry to hear that your son is having problems at school.

I home educate my two sons, both have ASD.  We have been home educating for last 5 years since my eldest was in reception and couldn't cope.  He is now 11 and his brother is 9 so not as old as your son.

I write a report for the LEA every year and they write back to say they are satisfied that their education is suitable.  We don't get any extra funding, if anything we have to fight for even basic assistance because school is used as a qualifying criteria.  Having said that we are getting on fine and have no plans to stop home educating.

My eldest has a Statement and it make no difference to home education.  It only applies to state schools.  We don't get any support from the LEA and don't really need it.  We have many friends who home educate and get support from them.  We are not looking at GCSEs yet but I know that it is possible to take them as an external candidate, at a local school,  if we wanted to.  At the moment we are thinking that we may skip GCSEs and look at A levels and University entrance requirements.

    I hope this helps.
