Aunties and other family members of 4 year old boy with Autism

Hello,

My name is Rebecca, I'm new to this site but I feel this is the best place to meet people who are like me. I have a nephew who is 4 years old and he is on the autism spectre. I struggle to understand it but I am trying to educate myself so that I can be there for him as support. I sometimes feel like I'm a bad auntie because I sometimes don't understand when he has a behaviour and how I am meant to help. I watch him on occasion as both his parents are healthcare workers and I want to be there to help them all.

  • You are being a great aunty by reaching out, educating yourself and trying so hard. I still have family members who say things like “he would behave like that if he was mine” like autism is my fault. You’ll get to know the strategies for helping an ASD child to feel more comfortable and in control.  Just keep doing what you’re doing, caring and educating.
