Aunties and other family members of 4 year old boy with Autism

Hello,

My name is Rebecca, I'm new to this site but I feel this is the best place to meet people who are like me. I have a nephew who is 4 years old and he is on the autism spectre. I struggle to understand it but I am trying to educate myself so that I can be there for him as support. I sometimes feel like I'm a bad auntie because I sometimes don't understand when he has a behaviour and how I am meant to help. I watch him on occasion as both his parents are healthcare workers and I want to be there to help them all.

  • Hi Rebecca, please don't feel like your a bad Auntie, this is new to you and if anything sounds like your a great Auntie for wanting to help more and understand. I would say spend more time him, get to know him and ask his parents how you can help, ask them to explain to you what his likes and dislikes are, what could be a trigger to cause a meltdown and what they do to help him Slight smile
