Gcse Exams

I never thought my daughter would be able to participate in GCSE exams but she has, she has Aspergers, she works hard, has no friends at school, she is mainly mainstream supported but to see your daughter pick her skin, to create large wounds, pick her scalp and remove lumps of hair just so she can try and conform and sit exams has been horrendously distressing. Where her future lies is in the mist, she is a clever girl but so vulnerable.  Does the Government or Education Authority really care about the mid stream kids who don't fit into particular boxes, she tries so hard but I really do think that the exam conditions and gradings should be looked at and versions adapted for those who can do but simply find the conditions extremely stressful.

  • Sorry to hear your daughter and you are finding GCSEs stressful. Have you spoken to the school to see if they can make adjustments to make the actual process less stressful - for example she could sit them in a classroom on her own rather than in a hall with everyone else?

    I f she can get through exams it will open up more opportunities, but its important to get across to her that each individual exam isn't worth worrying about. they can be resat , they can be taken any time in her life  - it's not the big deal that the school make it out to be.

    My son used to hate the general lectures the school did on ' you're not working hard enough/ taking it seriously etc' The schools  create a lot of stress because a lot of kids need a kick up the bum your daught needs the opposite - playing it all down. It might be worth asking the SENCO to have a little chat with her.

    What I have found since my son ended up restarting his first year in sixth form is that lots of youngsters don't follow the standard pattern to get to the end of their A levels - if it takes her a bit longer its no big deal. By doing GCSes she may ind a topic she really likes and wants to take further. If she works hard like you  say  ( and enjoys the hard work) uni is a possibiliy. You could also look for the subjects that have a higher level of coursework to reduce the stresses of exams.

    It's  also worth being very kind to both you are her during exam season - take out anything else that might add to the stress. For my son thats dropping weekly chores - picking and chosing activities he has he energy for and throwing in lots of favourite meals and treats.
