ASD - Behavior

Hello Community

My son was diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder when he was 16, he's now approaching his 19th birthday and we are finding it really hard in being able to maintain a supportive relationship with him, whatever we do to help is just seen as interfering and he always informs us that he really doesn't care what we think, he often comes across extremely rude and abusive and has no respect for his immediate family whatsoever (it's soul destroying).

I appreciate that life can be very difficult for him and of course we do make allowances for this, however I feel we allow for more allowances than we should. He won't engage in getting any help for his condition or even seek support.

He started university in September but unfortunately has had to withdraw for his own well being.

I'm struggling in trying to keep everything together and don't know where to go for help for my son.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having difficulty with your son's behaviour and relationship with you. I once knew someone else, like me, with hydrocephalus and autism (his was worse than mine) and epilepsy (like me, probably caused by the hydro) he had a rebellious streak and went off smoking weed and living off and on the streets with his "friends"....it really didn't end well...which was probably more to do with the epilepsy but the behavour was similar.
