Parent of a 14 month old boy and fiancé who has recently discovered he has high functioning autism

Hi all and nice to meet you. I have quietly been lurking in the background reading posts but haven’t posted until now.

I am looking for some advice and hoped someone could help please.

I am a first time mother of a son who is coming up for 14 months. He is showing many signs of autism and I’d like some advice on his walking.( and anything else anyone who has been through diagnos with their baby can give)

I know all babies walk and do everything in their own time and it’s still early however my boy constantly walks on his tip toes and has done for a long time. I wonder what exactly is going on... is he damaging his feet by walking like this? When will it stop? He isn’t walking at all or even close to walking, he simply holds on to the side of the couch and can walk along pushing a Walker but only the odd occasion he puts his feet flat.

I’ve read up on as much as I can with regards to toe walking but I was hoping to speak to someone who’s been in the same position and perhaps just been through a child autism diagnosis. I find it’s better to talk to someone rather than being on Google constantly.

When did you child start to walk and do they still walk on their tip toes? Did you see anyone/ doctors about this?

My health visitor is overdue to see him(13 months) but hasn’t contacted me yet and I suspect when I tell her about certain things such as this and his hand flapping and much more like eating everything in sight( pica) she may mention autism and we will start the process of perhaps getting him diagnosed

The reason I know my son has a form of autism ( and possible AHDH, sensory impairment and many more) is because he is showing many signs and also we have recently discovered my partner of 10 years has high function autism.( he hasn’t been diagnosed yet either but he has always said he was ‘different’ and after both reading up on autism we have realised that he must have a form of high functioning autism as well as AHDH, dyspraxia and more.

Apologies for the essay and if I have came across rude in any way. I have many emotions right now and I’m simply trying to find out as much as I can to be the best mother I can to my baby.

Thanks!

  • hi,

i 'll leave this for a parent to reply to.

just one thing, walking on tip toes will not do him any harm. When he starts wearing socks and shoes that might reduce/stop. The soles of his feet are highly sensitive and he is trying to avoid it by walking on his toes.

no you aren't rude in any way
