transport bus to school application declined. son now at home uneducated??

hi all, i am currently feeling very frustrated, my autistic son (8) goes to mainstream school, with full time 1 on 1 t.a  through his statement, highest band. but mobility needs are rewarded as low. this was fine, until he slowly got worse and now i cant even get him to school due to him running off. the last day i walked him to school he almost got ran over twice, and ran off for ten minutes, i was terrified, i had to drag him home, it was awful, for him and me. then my dad was taking us in car as the educational welfare officer came round the last day i couldnt get him there. she said since his attendance was 100% it wont matter if he is off for a week or so until a bus is sorted for him, this was mid december. the next day she called to say the request was declined. so off we wnt again...in dads car, then we couldnt do that again anymore as he went so crazy he ran out the car, and wouldnt get his seat belt on, screaming, i had to hold him down in the car home. so i called her back. she said until his annual review is brought forward from june to jan then nothing can be donw. i have called the office, i have called the educational welfares mobile, left mssages, she isnt replying, noone will help or discuss it. school dont know whats going on either.

so now i have my son at home, i cant even take him for fresh air until after tea for a walk when i am on my own, and the other children are at home with their dad as he needs full on 1 on 1. so he is stuck in all day, bored. he wont do work with me, ed welfare said that doesnt matter, as trying to teach a autistic child wont work as i am not a teacher. plus i have a 7 month old too at home.

i am really lost. he is too bright for a special school, as he is very very inteligant, but behavioural he is at a very low.

everything else is in place, pastoral, outreach support etc etc, its just the transport.

has anyone here had similar problems? if so how do i go about it. i feel so lost and i think he does too. xxx

thankyou xxx

  • hi - I can't work out from your post (sorry) if it's the transport of whatever kind that upsets him or that he doesn't want to go to school so gets upset on transport?  Has he always had such a strong reaction to travelling?   As another poster has sd, it doesn't seem right that there isn't transport for children with autism.  My son had transport to + from school for the whole of his school life.  Maybe the council has cut that budget.  I wd write to the Director of Children + Families (or similar title) at your council + also copy it to the Chair of that committee, who will be a councillor.  It wdn't do any harm to do another copy to the Chair (cllr) of the Scrutiny Ctee associated with that dept.  The exact details will be on your council's website.  I think you're being treated badly by all concerned.  They don't seem to be offering any kind of workable solution for you.  I hope things improve for you all soon.
