Autism Specific Schools!!!

After a lengthly discussion with Bounces Educational Physc we discussed about school I have requested for him which I sent off forms today to SENAS. Unfortunately the school is not what everyone thinks is suitable and they all so far feel he needs a autistic specific school, problem is closest one has no year group for him for another few years (they only doing year 2 upwards at moment, he in reception) 2nd one isnt ideal but is nice to a degree, 3rd is way too far (moseley - i live in handsworth, birmingham!!) also everytime i arrange to go and see it something always pops up. I have looked through papers given by SENAS and they are all way outside Birmingham, I just dont know what to do anymore!!!! if the school and SENAS say the named school is not suitable I need to be prepared and have somethink ready.

Bounce is only 5 and I just dont know what to do!!!!

Does anyone one know of any ASD specific schools that are close to birmingham but not too far out that could be considered?????

Has anyone else had to deal with anything like this before????

Would be so grateful for advice :)

  • hi tiredeyes - my son went to an autism specific boarding school when he was 9.   The school wasn't too far away but it wd have been a bit of a journey to go there + back every day + he wd have missed out on all the activities, continuing education that happened when the school day was finished.  Before that he was at an autism specific day school - 6 hrs a day.   He went as a day pupil for a month + then as a boarder after that.  He came home every fortnight + holidays.  He benefitted loads from the school, altho I was v anxious initially because he was younger than his yrs, how he wd or wdn't settle in etc.  It turned out fine.  If he'd wanted to he cd have come home every wk.  The holidays were longer than the LEA ones.  When LEA children had 1 wk off, he wd have 2.    I don't know anything much about the Birmingham area, schools etc.  Sorry.
