Talking to your child about their autism

Hi.  I'm new on here.  We have just started the process of getting our 6 year old daughter assessed for being on the autistic spectrum.  If she is diagnosed it would be that she is very high functioning.  We haven't yet spoken with her at all about anything to do with this.  How would you recommend we go about talking with her about the possibility of autism?  Thanks in advance.  Michelle

  • I would explain that nature is very good at making things that work, but sometimes they don't work very well - it's why some people need wheelchairs or glasses or hearing aids etc.        You could say that she might not be able to deal with stress and sudden changes or things that are not described very well so people will help her as much as they can so she can be the same as everyone else.

    Or something like that......  Smiley
