Help while we wait

Hello.

I have a daughter aged 2 who is currently waiting to be seen by a comm. paed but the waiting list is so long, we may not get seen until after Christmas.

We also been referred to SALT.
In the mean time I’m looking to help her in any way I can.

She is non verbal, she will not communicate or engage with me or others although will sometimes respond to music. She doesn’t enjoy toys or engage with them at all.

if any one has any tips/group recommendations/ company recommendations/play tips/website help that would be extremely helpful.

I don’t like the thought of her not getting any support until after Christmas but understand that the waiting list is backlogged.

TIA

  • Hi MumR,

Sorry to hear you're having to wait so long to get support for your daughter. If you are looking for some support groups in the meantime you might want to have a look at the Autism Services Directory, which you can find here - https://www.autism.org.uk/directory. You can filter the directory by the type of service you're looking for and your location, to hopefully find something suitable that's local to you.

Hope this is of some help,
    Best wishes,

  • Hi, I was wondering if she might respond to vision rather than hearing, and if you've looked into sign language / Makaton at all? Also, has she had any hearing tests or tried noise-cancelling headphones? I'm autistic, and the way I hear different sounds is affected, particularly speech. Some hearing technology can now dim background sound and amplify speech, which has helped me a lot and is starting to come out more. Wishing you all the best
