Toilet Training

Hi all,

My son is 5 years old (6 in a few months). He is on the spectrum and can only say a couple of words such as hello and bye.

I started a week ago with toilet training and so far not great. He knows when he needs to go but just won't goto the toilet.

Anyone with any advice or tips? Looked so much on the Internet but alot of advice is aimed at children not on the spectrum etc.

    I am not going to tell you that I am an expert on this as, at 6 years old, my daughter still hasn't managed it, although she is verbal.

    When you say he WON'T go to the toilet, why do you think this is?

    Fear of going to the toilet or the toilet itself?

    Distracted by whatever else is going on at the time he needs to go, or fear of missing out on something?

    Could it be something sensory? maybe an extractor fan in the bathroom or the brightness of the lighting or maybe even a smell?

    You're only a week in to the process so please don't put too much pressure on yourself to get it right first time - even neurotypical kids can take a while to learn and also regress at a later date.

    I will be watching this thread to see if anyone has something I can try too, as everything I have tried hasn't worked so far.

    My daughter definitely gets distracted and worries she's going to miss out, but other times it comes across as laziness and not caring.

    He will actually sit on the toilet when asked too but he won't do anything. He will just wait then do his buisness elsewhere. 

    Just so frustrating that there isn't much help out there for this sort of thing. Hopefully someone has been through this sort of situation and have some good tips.

    I did read a book called ready set potty by brenda batts. If you have time have a read I think some things might be useful to you.
