Help regarding how to go about getting my child diagnosed

Hi ,

Me and my partner believe our son who will be 3 in April is somewhere on the autistic spectrum as he has the folowing traits ....

Speaks only a handful of words and babbles a lot.

Doesn't play with toys how a normal child would but will happily sit there for hours lining up cars , animals, bricks , wotsits, chips ,,, anything to be honest.

Only responds to his name on his terms .

Can't bear certain noises or having his hair messed with.

Sometimes has a meltdown that can last a few hours over the slightest of things But mainly if he wants to do something and we stop him.

Walks on his tip toes a lot.

Flaps his arms when he's happy.

Will happily sit and stare at the washing machine for hours.

Only eats 2 or 3 different foods .

Doesn't really acknowledge other toddlers but will happily take something from them if he wants it.

Grabs your hand and moves it to parts of his body if he wants to be scratched or tickled.

He's a lovely boy who will happily hug and kiss us both but it's only recently that I've admitted to myself that he might have a problem and I would like to find out exactly what it is if its not autism?

At the moment we have paid to have him attend the baby nest at nursery  twice a week to help him socially and he sees a doctor every 6 month (just had his second assessment) who says he is lacking in certain areas but making progress .

Unfortunatly I work away a lot at the moment but after Christmas I plan on seeing this doctor and finding out exactly what path we are going down as know one seems to want to tell us if he is or isn't autistic but before I do I would just like to ask you guys what the normal procedure is and how long it takes? Ideally I would hope we could find out what is wrong with our boy before he starts school so we don't end up on the wrong path.

thanks for any information .

  • Thanks , may girlfreind has a meeting tomorrow with the heAlth visitor two we will see if this pushes things forward . Thanks

  • Hello i can only tell you that its sounds similar to what my daughter was like at that age. Shes 3 half now and still exhibits same behaviours. Caitlin was assesed by a peadtrician over six months and was diagnosed just after her third birthday.

I would recommend seeing your docter again to push the issue and asked to be referred to a peadtrician asap as you do have concerns and no one knows your child better than yourself. Also speak to your health visitor, give them a call and tell them your concerns as they can help too.

    I hope this helps.
