Returning from overseas with ehcp

We are lucky in that my 9 year old with asd has an excellent ehcp and support package. He is currently in a special needs school with a one to one as hr has wuite high needs.

My husband however has been offered a job in France and we are keen to go for a number of reasons. The job will pay for my son to have one to one support whilst we are in France. My concern however is that if it did not work out and we needed to return to the UK how easy would if be to get the support in my son's ehcp reinstated.

Does anyone know if it can be put on hold and if so for how long? We don't want to find out if we return in 6 months time that the ehcp is no longer valid and he will be reassessed. Has anyone been in this situation?

  • Hi NAS68309,

Unfortunately I'm not sure of the answer to your question, but the NAS does operate a service called the Education Rights Service, which you can find here - https://www.autism.org.uk/services/helplines/education-rights.aspx - The ERS offers impartial and confidential information and support to families on school education rights and entitlements, so they would probably be the best bet to get an answer to your question. The contact information is at the bottom of the page linked above.

Hope this will be of some help,
