Challenging behaviour

Hello, I’m new here.

Just wondered if anyone could offer help on how to manage an issue we have with my son who is 8 and on the spectrum. He has picked up bad words from YouTube and now uses them a lot, all day. Should I be removing his access to YouTube. He likes to watch things like lorries and washing machines of all things so give him access to kids YouTube.

He doesn’t seem to respond to us telling him we don’t like it or they are not kind words. It’s almost as if he saying them because he likes us being unhappy about it. The only way I see would work is by removing YouTube but would cause huge meltdowns.

  • Hi,

it’s frustrating isn’t it! I’ve been there with my son and we tried numerous ways of going about it but the only thing that worked for us is to completely ignore what he says. He might then say it more or louder but he will eventually realise it’s not getting him the reaction he wants.
Something else that might work is to speak to him through a favourite teddy/puppet/toy? Someone suggested this to us to deal with hitting and unkind hands/feet so we started speaking through his lemur teddy he got from Chester zoo. We couldn’t believe the power of the lemur ! He listened to the toy over us. It’s strange. But it worked!  Even though my sons verbal communication is improving he uses the lemur all the time to tell us stuff and if we have to explain something we just let the lemur do the talking and my sons listens. Hope this helps :)

  • Thanks for the reply. He is definitely just repeating it from YouTube. I really don’t want to take it away. Just tried all angles can’t think of how else to handle it.
