Meltdowns

My son is starting to have major meltdowns. He hates me and wants to punch me but also doesn't want me to leave his side.

Everything I do annoys him.

I am a quiet person and can be a bit grumpy, but I try to keep everything as fun as possible. I get tired a lot and sometimes this effects my speech and ability to find words to say.

He also clings on to any or finds criticism. If I say someone has done something well, he thinks I'm putting him down. I give him lots of opportunities to express himself and find ways for him to feel he is useful and great at what he does. He is in charge of the garden and he loves trains so we watch them, play them, pretend to be them.

He's sleeping more and more.

I know he's missing those closest to him.

Anyone got any tips or advice please?

  • I think the current situations hard for him and there is a lot of pent up emotions which he is struggling to comprehend. Having the opportunity to express himself and having the ability to are two different things as it’s possible that he really can’t find the right words. Maybe explore different ways of expression - drawing or drama based means can work. I think the first step otherwise is to weather the storm of lockdown - once you can have more of a routine again and he’s mixing with others things may calm down, in the meantime it’s patience and perseverance.
