Help! My Daughter doesn't even 'fit in' in a special school.

Hi,

I have a 12 year old autistic daughter in the Durham area, who currently attends one of the local special schools. We have a meeting with them soon with a view to removing her from the school, as it is not the right environment for her. They really have bent over backwards to accommodate her, and i can't praise them enough, but the truth is that the school is too big and noisy for her, and she just cannot cope in that kind of environment (even though it's a large school with only 200 pupils)

I can't afford to home school her, i wish i could. I just don't know what is going to happen to her if she can't even cope in a special school. There is nothing else out there, and there aren't any smaller schools available.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? What did you do? I refuse to give up on my little girl.

Thankyou

Caroline

  • Give it time, how long has she been there? Are things getting better or worse, or just continually bad?

Life isn't perfect, as long as it's better than a mainstream school.  Just keep complaining if the situation doesn't improve or gets worse.

I went to a special school in the 1970s when I was 9 years old.  So I can emphasise with you and your daughter.
