Good evening all, Im not really sure how to begin this only my husband and I have recently been told our youngest son is defiantly going to be on the autistic spectrum but may also have a genetic disorder. I have always known since he was born he was a special baby, he always seemed to be very content in his own world. He has finger flapped since he was 6 mths old and hand biting around the same time. He is non verbal and instead makes loud pitch screaming. He has low set ears and very small facial features.

As a mum to two older boys this has really hit us like a ton of bricks and quite often I feel like this is only happening to us which I know its not. I just really wanted to reach out somewhere to meet likeminded people who understand. Does anyone relate to what we are experiencing ? We are currently using PECS with our son and he seems to be doing ok with it. Did anyone else use this system and did it help your child to communicate ? 

Any advice or tips would be very much appreciated

    I completely relate. I have only just started looking at nurseries for my son but walking in reduced me to tears. I worry constantly that people wont get him and the way he is. The nursery we looked at had 23 children to a small room so we felt maybe he would struggle. We have allowed the test purely for me thinking if we receive a diagnosis of another condition we can use all the information we can to help him and help others understand him but I understand what your husband is saying. Its a very difficult and emotional journey. Many a night i've sat and got upset going over and over my pregnancy and blamed myself and questioned things but I now accept that my beautiful boy needs help in his life and I will do whatever it takes to get him it. Speak to the school and raise your concerns. Its normal to worry about your child/children. 

  • Hi my sons just been diagnosed too and my second son is waiting to be assessed, there’s also been mention of fragile x and a genetic test has been mentioned, I don’t know if I should allow the test or not, my husband says no that it should be there choice when there older,  I’m also so worried about school, they would be classed as high functioning but struggle in other areas, they are in mainstream primary school but I worry myself sick thinking the school will try and push them out, this is all so new to me, I feel so worried all the time.
