School refuse to refer son for assessment

Hi, wondering if anyone has any ideas about what to do next. My partners son thinks he is autistic and my partner thinks it is likely too. He was taken to the GP who referred him to CAMHS because he thought it likely too. The Send officer at school thought the same but now there has been a letter from CAMHS saying that the school have said that they have no concerns and there will be no assessment. My partners son is devastated about this, he really wants to know if he is autistic and thinks it would be better to know for sure. So does anyone know what the next move can be and is it possible without going down the private route to get him assessed without the schools involvement?

  • Hi, we had real challenge from the school in relation to my son and chose to go private, mainly down to the wait for the CAMHS appointment. It might be worth talking to the SEND advisory team in your local education authority - we found ours very helpful in terms of advice on challenging the school while knowing our rights under the law. My son's school have said my son is underperforming but does not meet their requirements for additional SEND support or assessment however we received his AS diagnosis today and are hopeful that this will mean they need to now look at this for him. If they don't then we'd be likely to request a SEND assessment from the local authority directly which you are able to do as a parent.
