School refuse to refer son for assessment

Hi, wondering if anyone has any ideas about what to do next. My partners son thinks he is autistic and my partner thinks it is likely too. He was taken to the GP who referred him to CAMHS because he thought it likely too. The Send officer at school thought the same but now there has been a letter from CAMHS saying that the school have said that they have no concerns and there will be no assessment. My partners son is devastated about this, he really wants to know if he is autistic and thinks it would be better to know for sure. So does anyone know what the next move can be and is it possible without going down the private route to get him assessed without the schools involvement?

  • Hello,

We started down the route of a diagnosis without the school being involved.  Their only involvement had been to fill in a form.  My daughter is mainly fine in school as she masks and tries to fit in she is almost a model pupil, at home it’s completely different.

Ask the GP to refer your son onto the ASD pathway.  First go on your own without your son and take a list of behaviours to back up why you think he’s autistic.  We mainly had concerns about sleeping so were referred to the paediatrician and then mentioned other concerns to them at that meeting.

I expect parts of the country have differing processes so apologies if that’s not the right information, that’s just been out experience.

Wishing you all the best x
