EHCP for social, emotional and sensory support

My son , who is in year 5, struggles with social, emotional and sensory support at school, which in turn has resulted in bullying.  We are liasing with his school to resolve the bullying issue.

Thinking ahead to secondary school, I am considering an EHCP, however, he is above average in many of his subjects, therefore support would be for social and emotional, as well as sensory processing, which he struggles with.

I have tried to contact IPSEA but it is difficult to get an appointment via their advice line.

I would be interested to know if anyone has succeeded in obtaining an EHCP for the above issues?  rather than for academic support.

  • I would say 100% get one, my son in primary was very quiet but very intelligent it was only till the transition from primary to secondary that it all went downhill, he completely stopped going to school due to sensory issues, we were referred to a psychologist who told us he is on the spectrum and has SPD on the waiting list for the diagnosis, they also said he won’t be able to copy well in a mainstream school now we have him home and are trying to get a EHCP for a SEN school.

  • Thank you for your reply. I'm so sorry to hear about your son's struggles with school. It is heartbreaking for all these children that struggle on a daily basis.

I think I will request and assessement for the EHCP. Thank you so much again for your reply; I do hope your son is successful in obtaining his EHCP and a specialist school.
