Hi Everyone
I am hoping that someone on here knows more than I do about what may be causing a ten year old with ASD to begin stammering. He is generally very anxious and we are guessing that it is being caused by stress, probably from school. It stops during school holidays, which seems like a big clue. We are concerned about how bad it is becoming. He didn't stammer earlier in childhood during the learning to speak stage.
Also, is the standard treatment for this to have speech therapy that results in robotic-sounding speech? I am asking because I know of children who have had speech therapy for different reasons (not for stammering) and their speech is very unusual and may be about as bad as a stammer.
I have searched online but can't find anything especially helpful. Most of the articles are about stammering that begins at a younger age. I couldn't find anything on this site, perhaps it isn't particularly associated with ASD.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
