Hospital advice for teenage son (surgical)

Hi all. Our son has been for an MRI before and they gave him gas as he freaks out at needles. He also freaked out at gas but I had to help hold him as it was an important MRI we couldnt miss. Anyway he now needs an operation and I have the date for pre ops and the surgery. I honestly dont know how I can help get him through it. Hes a teenager now so bigger than me. I've spoken to him about what to expect. But obviously not scared him. Hes adamant he wont have it done. Theres no other option at this point. Any advice please to help me help him?

  • He generally doesnt like hospitals. Hes been quite ill with various things in his short life sadly. I've tried asking what hes scared of but he cant pin point it. Before the mri they gave him a mask to play with but he wouldnt entertain it in any way. He didnt like the smell of the gas when they eventually put it on his face. Hes petrified of needles, even with the numbing cream on first. We've discussed with the surgeon what will happen without going into in depth detail. The op has been deferred due to him freaking out the last time but it cant wait any longer it needs to be done unfortunately

    Thanks guys, wish us luck

  • Maybe ask what scares him most about having surgery.

    YES, PLEASE... Do this!

There are a lot of things which I could also add, EDUCATION (sharing experiences to reassure of safety or techniques used (e.g.MRI) ) ... this is a good thing to talk about.

...Whatever "operation" You are talking about (You need *not* state it here), It would help very much to research VERY much, and discuss it, all of it, even whatever aspects You Yourself do not fully understand. In which case, consult the appropriate "Doctor/Surgeon" and You may be able to arrange a sort of one-to-one discussion about it, including Your "Son". Surgery can be refused until One is completely certain about it.
