Work Placement - Any Tips and Ideas for my very shy Boys placement

Hello Again...thank you for any help at all

My Boy is in year 10 and has to organise a work placement for 5 days in February 2012. He has been quite enthusiastic but any ideas we propose he rejects. He is Dyspraxic and ASD, he socialises very little and I am really worried that the wrong placement would fail...

Any similar experiences with you or your teenagers, what did school do to help, what things could we do to ensure he settles and fits in...

Thank you again xxxx

  • My son is also in Year 10 and has to set up a work placement to take place in July.He has a diagnosis of Aspergers and ODD.

Not sure if you have this in your area, but when he got his diagnosis, the school referred him to the local Autism Outreach dept who are now helping us find him a placement (they visit him in school every so often and discussed with him what he wanted to do).

Have you discussed with the school the issues or do they pass the buck as quite a few schools seem to do..

    Good Luck

  • Hi there.

Is there a local charity which would take your son for the week? You might find they're more sympathetic to his needs. I've worked for a few and we've had a number of young people on work placement and there's always been someone willing to look after them.

I agree though that there's an issue if your son is rejecting your suggestions. Could you draw up a short-list and let him choose who he approaches?

    Good luck!
