School refusing to acknowledge my son's autistic trait

It took three years to liaise with the school but the school refused to accept my concerns were genuine as my son is able to achieve results that are either in line or slightly below.  He works so hard and often feels under appreciated as his results are similar to his peers who dont work hard.  He says he works 5 time harder then them.

I began to notice that my son may be autistic when I started working at school so I  went to gp.  At the initial meeting I was told he is on spectrum and to notify his school.  He has been placed a waiting list to be assessed to get a formal diagnosis.

He finds language hard and is not bilingual as I noticed that he found languages hard so never taught him our home language.  However  the school insisted that he had to do a language and cant not drop it as language is part of curriculum.

The school is still adamant that he doesn't have a need and that they have no concerns.

I dont know what to do.  Can anyone give me some advice about the language and can the school be so ignorant?

Any advice information will be greatly appreciated.

Hello, Sorry to hear about your troubles with your son.

I’m not the parent of an autistic child, so I can’t give you first hand advice, but NAS does offer a parent to parent service which you can find here. The NAS helpline can be found here.

Many autistic childrens’ language abilities are delayed, but then they subsequently catch up. So this may happen with your son.

    All the best, Graham.
